It’s Whale-Watching Time in Cabo San Lucas

From December to March, three different types of whales return to their home away from home.

Whales are fascinating mammals. Keep reading if you’d like to know more about the whales that visit our part of the planet.

BLUE WHALES

•      The heart is about the size of a Volkswagen bug.
•      100 feet in length and weighing up to 200 tons.
•      A whale’s tongue can weigh as much as an elephant.
•      An adult blue whale consumes about 3.5 tons of krill a day.
•     Baby blue whales weigh 2.5 tons at birth and are 25 feet long.
•    The estimated number of blue whales worldwide is 10,000 - 25,000.
•     The gestation period is about 11-12 months.
•     Blue whales have a life expectancy of 80-90 years.

GRAY WHALES

Gray whales use baleen to sieve krill and other food from the water.

•  They have no teeth.
•  Gray whales can measure up to 50 feet in length and weigh 40 tons.
•  Their gestation period is about 13 months.
•      Life expectancy is 55-70 years.
•     Every year, Gray whales make a 15 to 20 thousand mile roundtrip between the icy seas between Alaska and Russia to the warm waters of Baja California Sur.

KILLER WHALES

·       Killer whales, or Orcas, are hunters and eat fish, squid, seals and other marine animals.

·  Mothers give birth every three to ten years, after a 17-month pregnancy.

·  Orcas are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white coloring

· They are intelligent, trainable mammals and some are stars in aquarium shows.

·  Killer whales can weigh up to six tons, about the same as a bus.

· Average life span in the wild ranges from 50 to 80 years.

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of every November. It became an official federal holiday in 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens." The holiday was scheduled to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.

There are reports that the original Thanksgiving proclamation was signed by George Washington. It then became a public holiday in the U.S.

 

The event Americans commonly refer to as the "First Thanksgiving," was celebrated in 1621 by Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World. The feast lasted three days and was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings," or days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as a military victory or the end of a drought.

Americans continue to celebrate Thanksgiving today. While the celebrations vary, they typically consist of turkey and a bread or cornbread stuffing.

TURTLES OF MEXICO

     Sea turtles have been swimming the oceans of the world for more than 150 million years. The seas and coastlines of Mexico are inhabited by six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles and all are classified as endangered.

Baja California Sur is home to five species of sea turtles: Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Olive Ridley and the Green Turtle.

We recommend you follow these federal regulations when encountering or viewing sea turtles.

·         Do not touch, harass or harm sea turtles.

·         Tours are by foot, in groups of less than 10.

·         Do not take photos using flash at any time during the tour.

·         Maintain a minimum distance of 30 feet from the turtle until egg laying begins.

·         Hatchlings cannot be handled by visitors at any time.

·         Don’t litter or discard plastics on the beach or in the sea.

·         Under no circumstance take or retain a sea turtle.

·         Violating any regulation is a federal crime punishable by jail and heavy fines.

·         The consumption or trade of eggs, meat and products derived from sea turtles is a federal crime.

SOLMAR HOTELS & RESORTS SHOWS OFF SUPERSTAR STAFFERS WITH NEW “I GOT THIS” CAMPAIGN

Los Cabos, Mexico (November 10, 2014)- Solmar Hotels & Resorts announced today the launch of a new social media campaign aimed at recognizing its incredible staff. Titled “I Got This” the campaign will be hosted primarily on Solmar’s Facebook page and will highlight several Solmar employees each week, with information on how they handle their roles with pride and enthusiasm, regardless of the obstacle before them, using the hashtag #IGotThis. 

 

Inspiration for the campaign came from the unwavering spirit and dedication of the entire Solmar staff following Hurricane Odile, which struck the destination in September. Despite significant damage to many of their own homes, the Solmar staff worked around the clock to ensure that all five properties were back up and running less than a month after the storm, ready to welcome back guests with open arms.

 

The campaign aims to recognize these key staffers but also showcase the fact that each day, they go above and beyond for guests; performing tasks and duties that appear to be ordinary but are in fact, extraordinary. The campaign also encourages consumer engagement as guests and followers of Solmar’s Facebook page will be asked to “Like” their favorite staff member’s photo. The top three employees with the most “Likes” will be rewarded with tickets to some of Cabo’s most popular attractions, such as the Outback Camel Safari & Outdoor Ziplines from Cabo Adventures and a Sunset Cruise on the Buccaneer Queen.
